During my previous role at Remitly, we encountered a significant challenge: the escalating threat of cyber fraud, particularly concerning domain-related scams.

As money transfer companies gained prominence, so did the risk of fraudulent activities like phishing and spoofing.

In an industry where trust is paramount, protecting our customers from falling victim to scams is of utmost importance.


In light of these increasing risks, we responded by taking the following steps:

The Strategic Move:

To tackle this threat head-on, we devised a proactive plan to secure not only our primary domain, remitly.com, but also all conceivable variations such as remitly.co, remitly.in, and more. This preemptive measure aimed to shield our customers from fake emails and landing pages designed to pilfer personal information and money.

The Domain Sharks Challenge:

However, the domain landscape harbors opportunistic individuals known as "domain sharks," who seize potentially valuable domains with the intention to sell them at exorbitant prices. Aware of our significance in the market, these sharks had already acquired some of the domains we required.

The Art Vandelay Solution:

Drawing inspiration from the ingenuity of Seinfeld, I spearheaded a project that borrowed a page from George Costanza's playbook. We registered a domain, vandelayindustries.com, crafted a logo, established a landing page, and even created an email address under the alias "Art Vandelay."

  • Utilizing creative strategies inspired by pop culture
  • Establishing a new domain as part of the acquisition strategy
  • Creating a fictional persona to negotiate domain acquisition

The Undercover Operation:

Embracing our inner Seinfeld, we approached the company owning the desired domain incognito. With the strategic guise of Art Vandelay, we negotiated and successfully acquired the domain— all without disclosing our true identity.
